I'm dreaming...

...of a white Thanksgiving!! More like a wet slushy Thanksgiving. The snow is not supposed to last that long but it is fun for a few days. We got a big downfall today and it is going to be in the 20's tomorrow! Yikes!
Lily wasn't sure what to make of it at first. We read a lot of stories about snow but she doesn't remember the last time she was in the snow, Dec 2008....

and today...
Someone in the family remembers what snow is like! He LOVES it!
See, this is why mom makes you wear mittens! Remember wearing these as a kid, where the string that ties them together weaves it way through your sleaves so you don't lose them? Genius! This is down at the lake by our house. We only lasted about ten minutes.
Gemma was less than impressed. It's cold out here!
It ended with her saying "Mama hold you"!
Too bad it took dad almost 2 hours to get home on the bus. It is supposed to continue to snow overnight and be sunny and frozen tomorrow. I am guessing all the schools will be closed so no preschool. Now we have to convince dad to work from home! SNOW DAY!!!

A Game

I don't love games, but this one I couldn't resist. Can you tell which one is Lily and which one is Gemma? Two of these photos were taken today on Gemma's 8 week birthday and two were taken on Lily's 8 week birthday! Same outfit, same crib, same sheets even!

Well, maybe it wasn't that difficult. They do look like sisters though!
Oh, and the cutest outfit and sweater are from my friend Jill. Her son Jake is betrothed to Lily and I am a little bitter she hasn't had another boy yet for Gemma to marry. Check Jake out, he is super handsome! They are going to be so happy together! This lavender sweater is a favorite and we are going to be so sad when Gemma out grows it. It does hang on the nursery wall though so we see it every day. Do you think I can convince you Jill to make a little red one to go with Gemma's Christmas dress? Nothing like advanced notice right? Just a thought.

Oh and photo 1 &4 are Lily.

Blow Out!

It started out like any other day. I took the rare opportunity while Lily was napping and Gemma was exceptionally cute, alert, and smiling to get some photos.
I was trying to make the most of some rare light through the windows and propping little Gemma up to pose!
One of her cutest outfits and lavender cozy blanket. Such a sweet girl at 7 weeks old. She has started smiling at us and melting our hearts.
Now, what happened next was not a rare occasion. You see, while taking a snooze in her swing, she may have had a poop. I have been mentioning this girl has some tummy troubles. Her toots can rival that of a frat boy! I know she will kill me for this when she is grown up but I tell the truth. This is the kind of stuff you forget and wonder if every baby is like this!!
I think you are gifted and exceptional in this department dear Gemma. Here is the proof.
Well, at least you get to wear all your clothes because we change your outfit twice a day. Sister doesn't mind, she still loves you!

To the tiger at the zoo...

Madeline just said "poo poo."

That is Lily's favorite line from the Madeline book and a common phrase during out trip to the zoo. Our friends Robin and Scott came up to Seattle over the weekend and were kind enough to give us their city pass for the zoo. It had been a while since our last visit and it was a beautiful sunny crisp day.

We hung out with the apes.
We did our best orangutan impression.
We rode some in the "choo choo" stroller when it got too far to walk. Gemma enjoyed a long snooze while we took in the sights.
We hitched a ride on the back of the gorilla.
We got a super close up view of the jaguar.
Uh, Mom he is super close!
Are you sure he can't get through the glass?
No really, he can't get out right?
It was a super fun morning. Too bad after a long nap back at home Lily woke up with a fever. Aw man!! No preschool for you tomorrow!

FALL in love

We have had several beautiful Fall days lately and we are taking every advantage of them!! Check out these colors LA people!
We have to play in the leaves too.We have also been busy FALLing in love with this little face. She is almost completely over her newborn rash and boy are we all glad. Here is what Gemma thinks about her rash!
This is how happy she is now that it is gone!
Oh yes, reason to celebrate!Sister is getting to be a big help. She can put the paci back in...
She can share snuggles in her bed...
and she can help with bath time too!Watching dad to see how it is done.
Ok, now Lily's turn to get involved.
I think Gemma is impressed.
She had her 6 week check up on Friday and weighs 9lbs 11oz and 21 1/2 inches long. She got her first round of immunizations which we are super glad about. Lily has been sick non stop since starting preschool and with flu season coming we need all the protection we can get. She is now on two medicines for reflux and gas/indigestion. Hopefully it starts to help her tummy feel better and sleep better. She is also going to get a wedge to sleep more upright in her crib so she doesn't have to sleep in the bouncy seat forever!

Sweet Gemma Grace

Today you are one month, one week, and one day old!!! Poor Gemma Grace, she must have second child syndrome without even knowing it yet. By this point in her life Lily probably had a million photos and blog posts about every burp and poop. Being the second one to a very active older sister you don't always get the spotlight! It doesn't mean we love you even one hair less, little Gemma. So this post is all about you!!
What's not lo love? You did get the fancy professional photo shoot so you are not all that neglected.
She is growing so fast but still seems so small. She has just outgrown her newborn size clothes at about 5 weeks of age. We had a troublesome bout of eye infection due to a blocked tear duct. See you are like your sister in some ways. So after about three trips to the doctor in two weeks and two different prescription eye drops it is all cleared up. You also have a seriously active tummy and require bottles of gas drops to aid your aching belly.
You are getting the hang of sleeping and are doing well sleeping at night with a few brief feedings. You go right back to sleep after we refill your tanks. We did finally discover the trick though. You must have a bit of reflux and cannot sleep very well laying flat so after we decided to put you in your bouncy seat to sleep in your room you are doing much better. Sleeping 3-4 hour stretches at night. We are all happy about that.
You do have your "awake and noisy" phase of each day right around dinner and evening time. Of course just as your sister goes to bed and we are hoping for a little relaxation before bed! You know how to be heard and get your attention then! Good thing there are two of us to take turns rocking you and bouncing you.
You did break out in a most horrible case of newborn rash a few weeks ago. It started on your forehead and nose, then as that started to clear you now broke out on your cheeks and neck. Oh good thing a mother's love does not see the rash because it is a pretty severe case. Hopefully in another week or two it will be gone and shortly there forgotten.
Your sister thinks you are,"so cuuute" and holds her little cupped hands near your face to pretend to squeeze you. She rubs your hair and pretends to wash you. She loves to say your name Gemmooooo and Sisty and make sure you are always with us. She also conveniently wants to be held whenever you are being held so she makes certain you don't get more than your share of attention.
We cannot decide who you look like. You have brown hair and probably blue eyes like Lily's. Perhaps you are waiting to declare which family member you want to resemble. We have seen glimpses of Uncle Joel and Uncle Eric in you though.
You are a very good baby and we feel very blessed. Considering your dad's history if infant colic we were a bit worried we wouldn't get lucky with a good baby the second time around. You are starting to smile and interact with us more and we love every bit. You weigh probably close to 9 pounds now. It is so fun to dress you up in all the cute tiny clothes and you have so many sweet new outfits you will hardly get to wear sisters hand me downs until you are old enough to resent it.
Don't grow too fast little Gemma, we love your tiny fingers and toes and want to savor every little bit even if we don't have the time to sit and coo over you every little minute.

We celebrated Halloween all week long. I think Lily wishes it could come once a month! Besides playing in her costume all week, the real festivities began on Friday evening. We headed over to the church where I attend a moms group for their Fall Festival. It was a BLAST! Grandma stayed the week with us to play with her grandbabies and enjoy the fall fun. We walked over to the church a block away. Well, Lily ran the whole way. So much for the slow turtle!

They had all sorts of games to play and get candy. This was fishing for candy in a kiddie pool filled with packing popcorn.
The biggest hit was the bouncy house. It was filled with bigger kids but Lily was not afraid. She kept saying jump jump jump, even though she wasn't even able to stand up with all the motion. She got tons of treats and really got the hang of grabbing for the candy. On Halloween morning we carved our pumpkins. This was only the second time Alex carved pumpkins and I think he even forgot the first time a few years ago. Lily would not touch the pumpkins insides or help carve. She did like the look of them once they were finished.
We toasted the seeds! Again, doesn't like the yucky feel on her hands.
She is happy to pose with the finished product though.
Baby Gemma was a good sport in her rabbit ears! She was the hare to Lily the tortoise! Poor thing has a wicked case of newborn rash! It started on her forehead and nose and just as that started to clear she broke out on her cheeks and chest!

In the afternoon, after a nap, we went to a local neighborhood shopping center to do some trick or treating. It was a bit overwhelming for Lily and she wasn't sure what to do. There were so many people it was body to body. They gave out granola bars and fruit leather and other "healthier" treats. None of which Lily will eat. She is a particular little girl. She wouldn't eat the fruit snacks, or licorice either. Pretty much M&M's is all she is interested in.
Sweet bunny didn't get any treats, no tricks either. She has a serious love of her cozy car seat with the furry cover in it. She sleeps the longest in this little nest. I would too though, it is so soft and warm.
After a chance to catch our breath and fill her with some Grandma England recipe soup Lily was ready to hit the neighborhood. Our street has never been very good for trick or treating. I don't think we have enough kids in the neighborhood. We decided to try a neighborhood about two blocks over. It was a hit!!We went for about an hour and she kept saying more, more, more after every house. We had to sort of trick her into coming home because she was having too much fun to stop! The houses were all well decorated with pumpkin candles, spider webs, and ghosts. She loved everything about it, especially the full size M&M's she scored at one house!
I certainly don't mind the peanut butter cups she scored either! Too bad we have to wait a whole year to do this again!!!
