Kinder Chorus

Gemma was in Kinder Chorus this Spring. She did not do it in the Fall and then realized all her friends were in it so of course she joined in Spring. She was too sick to perform in the all district chorus festival which is such a bummer!! This was really her first performance then. They did one performance for the school. I was volunteering that day so I got to see it.
Then they did the performance again that evening for parents.
Gemma was front and center wearing a headband with a red flower on it and got to stand next to her BFF Livia.
Easily the highlight for the kids was during one song they got to do the "Dab".
There are lots of hand motions that go along with the songs. Gemma did a great job and was very serious. She did all the motions and sang along.  Don't worry she chatted away with all the kids around her between the songs so she was pretty much her usual self.
Parent fail our batteries died on our camera and our phone memory is full so we only got a short video.

Seussical the Musical

The Junior Chorus play this year was Seussical the Musical. Lily was unsure whether she wanted to do chorus this spring since it is so much work and such a time commitment.  She decided to do the play and then had some serious regrets in the beginning. She found out her BFF Scarlett was not going to be in it and the tears ensued. We had already signed up and once things got underway she had a great time. She is even excited (a little) for next years play. She auditioned for the role of cat in the hat and she was cast as Robin bird, one of the bird girls. It was a great part for her.
Look at her amazing costume and make up!!She was told to have curly hair so she slept in foam curlers for two nights.  I mean this school takes their theater seriously! Mr LaGuardia the music director is so talented and dedicated. We really are lucky. Gemma can't wait until second grade when she can be in the Jr. Chorus.
Lily was really excited to wear the ear piece microphone. It's pretty much the highlight of having a role with a line. Then after they remove it and pull the tape off your cheek she was over it.
They performed the play twice for the school kids and then two evening shows for families. They split the main roles into two casts so more kids have a chance at a large role. Lily's friend Olivia was cat in the hat on Friday night with Lily. The make-up, sets and costumes just blew us away.
The bird girls had a lot of stage time, singing songs and had two lines each. This was just right for Lily's comfort level. She is not really interested in a large role.
Check out the Horton costume! A grandma sewed it! Parents all pitch in to volunteer their talents to build sets, sew costumes or help behind the scenes.

There are some really super talented kids at the school and they all have such a fun time.
Can you believe the set?  The story is sort of a medley of Dr. Seuss stories and characters. Mainly it is "Horton Hears a Who" with some "Cat in the Hat" thrown in.

Lily and Olivia at the end of the night.
Maybe one of their favorite things about the show is the cast party after the Sat show. It is the finally performance and after the cast changes they clear the MPR and put on loud music and DANCE!! All the parents bring snacks (read: junk food galore) and the kids eat, dance, and chase each other around. They don't leave until 9:30PM folks!!
The kids spent Sunday recovering and I spent Sunday at work with the Seussical songs stuck on repeat in my head!!! It was so much fun and we are so proud. They film the play so we bought a copy and next time anyone comes over we will plop you on the couch and force you to watch!!!

We come from everywhere & heart of eagle

Third grade does a whole unit on Ellis Island and immigration. They talk about where their ancestors came from and how they came to the US. They had to imagine if they were immigrants and what they would bring to their new country. Then one day they had to dress up like their chosen immigrant and do a simulation of Ellis Island. They sure look like an eclectic bunch.
Lily chose her Dad as her immigrant. Obviously he did not come through Ellis Island, unless that is what British airways is now called. It didn't matter how long ago you immigrated. Most students did a parent or grandparent, some of whom actually did come through Ellis Island.
Lily, Olivia, Scarlett and Charlie. They really got into character pretending to be old, sick tired or poor.
Then, a few weeks later they performed a play called "We Come From Everywhere." There were groups of kids from different countries that told the story of why or how they came to the US. It was cute. Lily was one of the kids from China.
Good thing Granny had a little china hat in the Halloween bin for us to borrow.
They sang songs and everyone had a line to say.
Scarlett was one of the main characters.
All the Chinese kids.
I'm sure the Chinese would have something to say about the authenticity of their attire but we did our best.
Lily was also honored at the April heart of an eagle assembly.
This is her second award for the year!!! The teachers always say you can win the award twice but I thought they were just saying that to keep the kids behaving well.
She got another certificate, lunch bag, spirit stick and a free kids meal at Corner Bakery!!
It was fun that she was really surprised since she did not expect to win twice. We had to come up with some fake reason we were attending the assembly not to tip her off.
