Lily turns 11 !!

Lily decided to have a sleep over party for her 11th birthday with a few close friends. She had Liv who is Gemma's BFF and always gets to come to our parties.
Gemma made a sweet home-made gift for Lily and put so much work and effort into it. Lily loved it.
Sophia is in girl scouts with Lily, her mom Barb is the leader, and they have grown very close.
Sabina was Lily's first friend at MATES in Kindergarten and they have become good friends again after our trip to Kauai last summer. Sewing class buddies they are modeling their new shorts they sewed in their latest class.
Scarlett of course, it would not be a birthday without her BFF there. We had to juggle many dates to make sure all these girls could make it.
Scarlett is taking Lily to Harry Potter World for her birthday present.
After dinner and gifts it was time for cake. Lily chose chocolate lava cakes with vanilla ice cream.
Then they watched a movie. It was a vote between: Holes, Sisterhood of the traveling pants, and 13 going on 30. The clear winner was 13 going on 30, it was a big hit.
The older girls snuggled in to the guest bedroom, two on the bed and two on the floor. Gemma and Liv slept in Lily's room with the trundle bed.
After much giggling and goofing off they finally crashed out at 11:30pm. They woke up a bit before 7am. Not too bad. They all played on the trampoline for hours with balloons under their shirts like they were pregnant!! Then they had pancakes and bacon and strawberries! It was a big hit.

Lily's actual birthday was the following weekend. It was nice to all be home together on her birthday. We had to start with some gifts in bed.
Gift cards, a desk for her room, and a huge lego set!!

Then we had breakfast outside in the beautiful weather. Lily's choice was cinnamon rolls and again with the bacon.
We had a low key day at home then went out to dinner to meet up with cousins and Goppy. Lily wanted In'n'out for her birthday dinner. It was a crowd pleaser.
Then back to our house for some play time and cake of course. Lily wanted some kitties on her cake and eleven candles too!

Owen graduates High School

Right after school got out and Lily had her culmination and party we hit the road for the airport to fly to Portland. Owen was graduating high school and we all wanted to go see him and help him celebrate.
We had a great flight up passing snacks amongst cousins.
After arriving and having dinner and catching up with cousins we went to bed. In the AM we had tons of snuggles with August the biggest lap dog you ever met.
We had some time before we had to get ready for graduation so we took the kids to swim at the hotel pool.
The kids swam for hours each day we were there. It was so fun to have so much cousin time.

Before Owen had to leave to get to the graduation stadium we gave him his gifts and in exchange forced him to pose for photos with us all. We made Owen a candy bar "card" and a lei made out of money.

He got plenty of money to help with college and a new laptop for school too.

Pictures were going so well until we tried to get one with all the cousins. Gwyn has somehow developed an irrational fear of Owen. When he has come to LA in the past it usually wears off after an evening together. She says he is too "big" and that's why he is scary. This trip the fear went to the next level.
We couldn't even get her to look at him or really be in the same room with him. It's going to be fun to laugh at all this years from now.

With all the silly kids we didn't really get one decent photo but that's the memories we have of the weekend too.

Owen was a trooper posing with us all. Ben got some uncle love as well.
We all piled into the giant van to drive to the stadium downtown for the ceremony.
We found a good spot behind the handicap parking for Goppy and passed around goldfish and candy to occupy the crew.
Luckily we were able to spot him in the huge crowd of graduating seniors.
The fan favorite was the service dog who was chilling the whole time in his cap.
After the ceremony we managed to find Owen in the sea of people.
Owen's girlfriend Ariah graduated this year as well from another high school so she was able to attend and watch Owen with us.
After graduation Owen went to grad night until the wee hours of the morning so he was sleeping in the next day. We had planned a little surprise for him while he slept. We covered his door in streamers of his school colors and then stuffed them with balloons.
When he woke up and opened the door the balloons came tumbling in his room and he was trapped! Luckily we were right there when he opened it and got to see. He was surprised!
They had a small graduation party for him that afternoon at the house and it was beautiful weather to sit out and relax. Everyone had a great time and then there was time for more swimming at the pool. It was a bummer to have to leave the next day to go back to work and summer camps! Such a fun filled busy weekend!

Lily's 5th grade culmination

For weeks leading up to the last day of school the fifth graders were so sad anticipating the end of their time at MATES. They had made such great friendships and so many memories. By the time the morning of culmination arrived they were full of excitement.
While family and friends line up in front of the MPR waiting to be let in the kids run around and act goofy together for one last time. Lily was all decked out in a new dress and shoes with some of her girl scout troop friends.
The kids checked in at their classroom and the parents eagerly waited in the MPR.

The students filed in from the back and made their way up the stage to the risers. They performed several songs. The director and the two fifth grade teachers gave speeches.

One student from each class was also selected to give a speech as well. They were very heartfelt and touching about their time her at MATES and how much the teachers and friendships meant to them. Each teacher gave a speech as well.

Each student was called by name to receive their certificate and shake hands.

Lily had Ms. Winter for her teacher this year and loved being in her class. She is the perfect mix of kind and strict to prepare them for middle school.

We made our kids pose with all the decorations we so painstakingly hung the night before. Lily and her best friend Scarlett and her mom Julie. These girls have been together every year here at MATES and will be going to different middle schools in the Fall.

Mrs. Linklater was Lily & Gemma's second grade teacher and an absolute favorite. I think every student that has ever had her claims her as their favorite too.

Lily, Scarlett and Charlee are more sad to say goodbye.
Sabina was one of the students that was chosen to give a speech. She did a wonderful job! She and Lily will be starting middle school together in the Fall and are so excited to have each other.
Olivia also gave a speech and brought everyone close to tears. Herself most of all.

After the culmination ceremony students can leave school with their parents. Later that afternoon some families had organized a fifth grade party at a summer camp in Malibu canyon. It was amazing!
They had a dunk tank, water slides, a swimming pool, and more!
We were only able to stay an hour or so because we had a plane to catch to Portland. Lily made the most of her hour with her friends.
